Watching Airplanes

Down at the airport
Next to the beach in Lyall Bay
Surfers play with the waves
The day is bright blue and sun
I’m watching airplanes.

Back in my old life,
I used to watch airplanes
Taking off through the grey rain-curtain
To places with white shores
To some far green country
How I wished myself on board!
How I longed to fly away
Into a swift sunrise.

I’m watching airplanes
Down at the beach
In Lyall Bay
Surfers in the water
Look like so many sharks
Black against the waves.
I’m glad I’m staying.
