The pasacalles by Diego Fernandez de Huete are a set of pieces in late baroque style which were presumably meant for use in the church service - much like J.S. Bach's collection of preludes and fugues for organ, the pasacalles cover the entire set of church "tones" including some transposed modes - in effect, almost the entire range of major and minor keys. Little is known about the composer except that he served as principal harpist at the cathedral in Toledo. The "Compendio numeroso de cifras para harpa" is a vast collection of original harp music from the very early 18th century, covering musical styles from simple dance tunes to character pieces and the very elaborate and beautiful pasacalles, which fall nothing short of some of the best music of the time. To my knowledge, this music has not been made available in a modern edition or on recordings previously - but one of the pasacalles features on my cd "700 Years of Pop" listen to an excerpt here: The music is of medium to advanced difficulty and suitable for more experienced players of chromatic or pedal harps. It is also suitable for organ and keyboard instruments. |
